One product, one number: the API and every client cut from it answer to the version cloud's release train mints, so a reader holding 8.5.156 can name the release it came from. The clients had drifted to their own counters -- 8.5.89, 8.5.91, 0.1.0, 0.1.0-alpha.5 -- because the fanout that carries the number can only run in check mode on this forge and never writes.
