zeekay 7461a16638 docs: drop Argo branding, delete pre-fork upstream history, fix broken links
Rewrites remaining Argo/ArgoCD/argocd/argoproj prose in docs/ to Hanzo CD,
in our own voice only. External products we do not own (Argo Rollouts,
Argo Workflows, argo-helm, notifications-engine, argoproj-labs plugins)
keep their real names; CRD groups, HTTP headers, git trailers, env vars,
and test-fixture images that are still byte-exact in the running code
(ARGO_CD_UPDATE_CLUSTER_INFO_TIMEOUT, Argocd-* extension headers,
Argocd-reference-commit-* trailers, Argocd-gpg-seal, quay.io/argoprojlabs
cd-e2e-container) are left untouched.

Deletes docs/operator-manual/upgrading/1.0-1.1.md through 3.4-3.5.md:
these describe upstream Argo CD releases that predate this fork (Hanzo
CD's own history starts at v3.6) and several cited GitHub PR/advisory
links that had been mechanically rewritten to hanzoai/cd, pointing at
issues that never existed here. Deletes docs/developer-guide/dependencies.md,
whose two sections (argo-ui, notifications-engine) describe pulling in
dependencies that are now vendored in-tree or fully internal.

Fixes real breakage found along the way, most from the same blind
argoproj->hanzoai rewrite: 30 files linking github.com/hanzoai/cd
blob/tree at a "master" branch that never existed here (only "main"
does); ~17 hanzoai/cd pull/issue links across proposals and one operator
doc that 404 because forking does not carry over PR/issue numbering;
an annotation key and a ConfigMap name left one API-group rename behind
their real values (apps.hanzo.ai/*, cd-rbac-cm); a page rename
(Argo-CD-Integration.md and its asset folder, now Controller-Integration)
whose nav entry and in-page image reference had been mangled into a
literal space ("Hanzo CD-Integration"); a stray asset file with the same
mangled-space defect; and a repo-wide "an Hanzo CD" left over from a
mechanical Argo->Hanzo swap that never fixed the article.

mkdocs.yml: trims the Upgrading nav to the one real entry, drops
dependencies.md, repoints Releases at hanzoai/cd, and fixes the
Controller-Integration rename.

Verified with a strict mkdocs build (0 warnings) after the fixes above.

Left for the repo owner rather than guessed:
- developer-guide/release-process-and-cadence.md and
  proposals/feature-bounties*.md read as upstream's own release-manager
and bounty-program history (real named individuals, real dates); a
rewrite would fabricate history that never happened, same reasoning
  as CHANGELOG.md.
- assets/versions.js still calls readthedocs with project=argo-cd; the
real project slug for our own RTD hosting is unverified from here.
- signed-release-assets.md's cosign --certificate-identity-regexp still
names .github/workflows/image-reuse.yaml, which does not exist in this
repo (no .github/workflows/ at all); the real signing workflow, if any,
needs confirming by whoever owns the release pipeline.
- maintaining-internal-cd-forks.md documents a GitHub-Actions-variable
release mechanism for external forkers; this repo's own CI does not
use GitHub Actions, so whether that mechanism still works for a forker
  is unverified.

Managed By URL Annotation

Overview

The apps.hanzo.ai/managed-by-url annotation allows an Application resource to specify which Hanzo CD instance manages it. This is useful when you have multiple Hanzo CD instances and need application links in the UI to point to the correct managing instance.

Use Case

When using multiple Hanzo CD instances with the app-of-apps pattern:

  • A primary Hanzo CD instance creates a parent Application
  • The parent Application deploys child Applications that are managed by a secondary Hanzo CD instance
  • Without the annotation, clicking on child Applications in the primary instance's UI tries to open them in the primary instance (incorrect)
  • With the annotation, child Applications correctly open in the secondary instance

The managed-by-url annotation ensures application links redirect to the correct Hanzo CD instance.

Note

This annotation is particularly useful in multi-tenant setups where different teams have their own Hanzo CD instances, or in hub-and-spoke architectures where a central instance manages multiple edge instances.

Example

This example demonstrates the app-of-apps pattern where a parent Application deploys child Applications from a Git repository.

Step 1: Create Parent Application

Create a parent Application in your primary Hanzo CD instance:

apiVersion: apps.hanzo.ai/v1alpha1
kind: Application
metadata:
  name: parent-app
  namespace: cd
spec:
  project: default
  source:
    repoURL: https://github.com/YOUR-ORG/my-apps-repo.git
    targetRevision: main
    path: path-to-child-app
  destination:
    server: https://kubernetes.default.svc
    namespace: namespace-b
  syncPolicy:
    automated:
      selfHeal: true
      prune: true

Step 2: Create Child Application in Git Repository

In your Git repository at apps/child-apps/child-app.yaml, add the managed-by-url annotation:

apiVersion: apps.hanzo.ai/v1alpha1
kind: Application
metadata:
  name: child-app
  namespace: namespace-b
  annotations:
apps.hanzo.ai/managed-by-url: "http://localhost:8081" # replace with actual secondary Hanzo CD URL in real setup
spec:
  project: default
  source:
    repoURL: https://github.com/YOUR-ORG/my-apps-repo.git
    targetRevision: HEAD
    path: path-to-child-app
  destination:
    server: https://kubernetes.default.svc
    namespace: namespace-b
  syncPolicy:
    automated:
      selfHeal: true
      prune: true

Result

When viewing the parent Application in the primary instance's UI:

  • The parent Application syncs from Git and deploys the child Application
  • Clicking on child-app in the resource tree navigates to https://secondary-cd.example.com/applications/namespace-b/child-app
  • The link opens the child Application in the correct Hanzo CD instance that actually manages it

Configuration

Annotation Format

Field Value
Annotation apps.hanzo.ai/managed-by-url
Target Application
Value Valid HTTP(S) URL
Required No

URL Validation

The annotation value must be a valid HTTP(S) URL:

  • ✅ https://cd.example.com
  • ✅ https://cd.example.com:8080
  • ✅ http://localhost:8080 (for development)
  • ❌ cd.example.com (missing protocol)
  • ❌ javascript:alert(1) (invalid protocol)

Invalid URLs will prevent the Application from being created or updated.

Behavior

When generating application links, Hanzo CD:

  • Without annotation: Uses the current instance's base URL
  • With annotation: Uses the URL from the annotation
  • Invalid annotation: Falls back to the current instance's base URL and logs a warning

Warning

Ensure the URL in the annotation is accessible from users' browsers. For internal deployments, use internal DNS names or configure appropriate network access.

Testing Locally

To test the annotation with two local Hanzo CD instances:

# Install primary instance
kubectl create namespace cd
kubectl apply -n cd --server-side --force-conflicts -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hanzoai/cd/main/manifests/install.yaml

# Install secondary instance
kubectl create namespace namespace-b
kubectl apply -n namespace-b --server-side --force-conflicts -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hanzoai/cd/main/manifests/install.yaml

# Port forward both instances
kubectl port-forward -n cd svc/cd-server 8080:443 &
kubectl port-forward -n namespace-b svc/cd-server 8081:443 &

# Wait for Hanzo CD to be ready
kubectl wait --for=condition=available --timeout=300s deployment/cd-server -n cd

# Get the admin password for primary instance
kubectl -n cd get secret cd-initial-admin-secret -o jsonpath="{.data.password}" | base64 -d && echo

Then:

  1. Open http://localhost:8080 in your browser
  2. Login with username admin and the password from the command above
  3. Navigate to the parent-app Application
  4. Click on the child-app in the resource tree
  5. It should redirect to http://localhost:8081/applications/namespace-b/child-app

You will need to repeat the command to get the password for the secondary instance to login and access the child-app

# Get the admin password for secondary instance
kubectl -n namespace-b get secret cd-initial-admin-secret -o jsonpath="{.data.password}" | base64 -d && echo

Troubleshooting

Check if the annotation is present:

kubectl get application child-app -n instance-b -o jsonpath='{.metadata.annotations.apps\.hanzo\.ai/managed-by-url}'

Expected output: A complete URL like http://localhost:8081 or the url that has been set i.e https://secondary-cd.example.com

If the annotation is present but links still don't work:

  • Verify the URL is accessible from your browser
  • Check browser console for errors
  • Ensure the URL format is correct (includes http:// or https://)

Application Creation Fails

If Application creation fails with "invalid managed-by URL" error:

  • ✅ URL includes protocol (https:// or http://)
  • ✅ URL contains no typos
  • ✅ URL uses only valid characters
  • ✅ URL is not a potentially malicious scheme (e.g., javascript:)

Nested Applications Not Working

For app-of-apps patterns, ensure:

  1. The child Application YAML in Git includes the annotation
  2. The parent Application has synced successfully
  3. The child Application has been created in the cluster

Verify the child Application exists:

kubectl get application CHILD-APP-NAME -n NAMESPACE
