The gateway returns a real 402 naming the refusal `insufficient_balance`. The renderer draws the add-credit paywall from `insufficient_quota`, so the name it was handed meant nothing to it and the turn rendered as "Something went wrong on our side" โ an outage, shown to the one reader who could have fixed it by paying. The gateway's spellings are folded into the one name at the boundary they enter, so nothing downstream has to learn a second word for the same refusal. A broken credential still arrives as its own thing and is still kept apart.
