SetNextCoupon puts a percent off the next renewal invoice on the subject's live subscription (its held paid plan, or a trial of one), or takes it off with percent 0. The renewal hands it to the period invoice as a renewal coupon, after the promo and off the plan fee alone, clears it on the row it persists, and gives it back when no invoice was built. An owed period's invoice that already carries it clears it too, so a renewal whose row was not saved cannot discount a second period. A renewal coupon reads "CODE — N% off this renewal"; a plan coupon still reads off the first month.
