Not a metaphor: every pixel of the 32x32 this site served was 255,255,255. I had compared it to the repo by checksum earlier, found them equal, and called it fixed — which is exactly how a blank icon survives. Bytes match, and nothing is drawn. Three sibling surfaces had the opposite version of the same fault: hanzo.ai, cloud.hanzo.ai and sentry.hanzo.ai served a 48x48 whose 2,304 pixels were all black. The cause was upstream of both, in @hanzo/logo's getFaviconSVG: a black tile with a white mark. A tab strip is light in every default theme, so that reads as a blob, and the transparent variant beside it vanishes. Fixed there (v1.0.15, pushed) and taken from that build here, rather than drawn again locally — one source, so the estate converges instead of each surface inventing a mark. Black mark, white ground, at every size the browser might ask for. The tile carries its own contrast, so it holds on light and dark chrome. favicon-dev keeps the old polarity on purpose: a dev tab should not look identical to production. safari-pinned-tab.svg is untouched — it is a mask, and a mask wants a silhouette, not a ground. Verified per size, not per hash: every PNG and all six ICO frames read white at the edge and black at the centre. The ?v= tag moves so browsers refetch instead of showing the blank one from cache.
