.gitignore has excluded __pycache__/ and *.pyc since before any of this, but 3393 .pyc files were tracked anyway, so the rule never took effect on them. That is not only untidy. The import check reads the git index to answer "would a fresh clone of this commit start", and a tracked .pyc answered yes for a module with no source: insights/temporal/quota_limiting has nothing but two .pyc files, and the directory test called it committed. The checker stopped counting bytecode in 5141d1da764; this removes the bytecode, which is the other half — one fix per layer, so neither has to trust the other. Only index entries change. Nothing on disk moves, and the ignore rule now keeps regenerated bytecode out on its own.
