The {{$variable}} rewrite turned the Prometheus spelling into {{index .Labels "labels.service"}}, which no series carries, so every rule written that way rendered the label empty (" has failed its health probe"). Both $-forms now strip the labels. prefix, and {{ $x }} with spaces reads its name from the match rather than from trimming the braces.
