GitHub reports hanzoai/vector as "MIT License". It reads that off this branch,
`main`, whose LICENSE is a Hanzo-written MIT stub added in the initial commit
(f2b8a6205, 2026-01-19). The product is on `master`: 5421 commits rooted at
Qdrant's own "init", 13 crates declaring Apache-2.0 and still naming Andrey
Vasnetsov and the Qdrant Team as authors, LICENSE untouched since Qdrant
created it.
So the repository advertised MIT over Apache-2.0 code it did not write, and the
README on this branch — which describes that product down to HNSW, payload
filtering and ports 6333/6334 — closed with "MIT License". Anyone relying on
the repository's stated licence was relying on the wrong one.
LICENSE and NOTICE are now byte-identical to master's, and the README's licence
section says Apache-2.0 and points at the upstream.
This is a licensing determination, so it is worth being precise about what it
is not: no upstream licence was edited. The file replaced here is ours, written
by us, describing software that is not ours. Correcting it is not the same act
as touching Qdrant's LICENSE, which stays exactly as they wrote it.
One thing this does not settle, for whoever owns the repository: the default
branch is still this stub rather than `master`, where the code is. That is a
product decision; the licence label was not.

- The history root of this branch is Qdrant's own first commit
|
|
(e4452500a, 2020-05-30, Andrey Vasnetsov, "init"), and the full upstream
|
|
history — 5421 commits — is present.
|
|
- The last upstream commit carried here is a5a99b784 (2026-02-19,
|
|
Tim Visée), immediately after 7ac17b142 "Bump version to 1.17.0". The
|
|
fork base is therefore Qdrant 1.17.0, which lib/api/Cargo.toml still
|
|
reports as its version.
|
|
- The rebrand is d86e4dc55 (2026-03-03, "chore: rebrand to Hanzo Vector"),
|
|
and only seven commits on this branch are Hanzo's.
|
|
- 13 of the 14 crates under lib/ still declare their upstream authors,
|
|
"Andrey Vasnetsov" and "Qdrant Team <[email protected]>", and all of them
|
|
declare license = "Apache-2.0".
|
|
|
|
Attribution above uses the names the source itself carries. Qdrant's LICENSE
|
|
is the bare Apache-2.0 text with no copyright line (its appendix still reads
|
|
"Copyright [yyyy] [name of copyright owner]"), and no source file in the tree
|
|
carries a copyright header, so the manifests are the only in-repository
|
|
statement of authorship. The legal entity behind the project is not named
|
|
anywhere in this repository and is recorded here as UNVERIFIED: settling it
|
|
requires a statement from Qdrant, not an inference. An earlier draft of this
|
|
NOTICE said "Qdrant Solutions GmbH"; that string appears nowhere in Qdrant's
|
|
source or licence and was not carried forward.
|
|
|
|
Upstream Qdrant ships no NOTICE file — verified by searching the whole
|
|
history, where the only NOTICE blobs are the two Hanzo-authored ones. There
|
|
are therefore no Apache-2.0 §4(d) attributions to propagate, and this file
|
|
exists to identify the upstream, not to relay one.
|
|
|
|
LICENSE is Qdrant's, untouched since their own "Create LICENSE" commit
|
|
(76ea87a82, 2021-04-08). It is deliberately not edited: with no upstream
|
|
copyright line in it there is nothing there to preserve, and attribution
|
|
belongs in NOTICE.
|
|
|
|
DEVIATIONS
|
|
|
|
- Rebranded to "Hanzo Vector"; the binary and root package are renamed from
|
|
qdrant to hanzo-vector (d86e4dc55).
|
|
- The root Cargo.toml's authors field was rewritten in that same commit from
|
|
["Andrey Vasnetsov", "Qdrant Team"] to ["Hanzo AI <[email protected]>"]. That is
|
|
the one place upstream authorship was removed; it is restored to the record
|
|
here, and the 13 lib/ crates were never changed.
|
|
- ZAP binary RPC transport added on port 6335, alongside upstream's REST
|
|
(6333) and gRPC (6334) (fcc14c9ce).
|
|
- Agent documentation added (LLM.md, with CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md as
|
|
symlinks); docker-compose.yml renamed to compose.yml.
|
|
- Config keys, storage layout and the REST/gRPC API surface are upstream's
|
|
and are unchanged.
|
|
|
|
BRANCHES
|
|
|
|
The code lives on `master`. The repository's default branch, `main`, is an
|
|
unrelated five-file stub (README, LLM.md, CLAUDE.md, .github/hero.svg,
|
|
LICENSE) that shares no history with this branch and carries no source. Its
|
|
LICENSE declared MIT, which is corrected on that branch to match what this
|
|
product actually is.
