QuasarSTM~3.0~\cite{lp010-quasarstm-3} activated on Lux mainnet on
2025-12-25. It shipped the GPU-native ordered MVCC \emph{substrate} for
Lux's Nova (linear) and Nebula (DAG) execution modes: the lane
abstraction, the wave-tick scheduler, the three-tier validation
\emph{skeleton}, the deterministic contention manager, and a multi-GPU
sharding stub. The design statement was that STM stops being a
retroactive conflict detector and becomes a scheduler-aware fabric
beneath Prism frontiers and EVM fibers.
\paragraph{What 3.0 actually shipped.}
The honest assessment is that 3.0 was the substrate, not the production
system. Specifically:
\begin{itemize}[leftmargin=2em]
\item The cryptographic verifiers (\texttt{verify\_bls\_aggregate},
\texttt{verify\_corona\_share}, \texttt{verify\_mldsa\_groth16})
were HMAC-keccak placeholders---real cryptographic verification
with one-way master secrets and cross-lane domain tags, but not
the real curve / lattice / SNARK primitives.
\item The EVM fiber VM covered 118 of the targeted 175
opcodes---arithmetic, environment, stack manipulation, basic
memory and storage, control flow, return paths---but \emph{not}
the \texttt{CALL} family, \texttt{CREATE}/\texttt{CREATE2},
\texttt{LOG}$_n$, \texttt{EXTCODE}$\!*$, \texttt{RETURNDATA}$\!*$,
\texttt{TLOAD}/\texttt{TSTORE}, \texttt{MCOPY}, or
\texttt{BLOBHASH}/\texttt{BLOBBASEFEE}.
\item Tier~1 lane-clock validation was sketched but not the production
fast path; Tier~3 semantic reducers were enumerated as
\texttt{DeferredOpKind} but not committed at horizon time.
\item The CSMV-style commit server and the Motor-style VersionBlock
layout were design notes, not code.
\item There was no formal CPU reference and no cross-backend
determinism harness gating CI.
\end{itemize}
\paragraph{What 4.0 ships.}
This paper specifies QuasarSTM~4.0, the production spec activated on
2026-02-14. Every gap above is closed. Every feature is in the
\texttt{cevm} substrate, exercised by the cross-backend determinism
harness, and gated in CI at the LP-137 substrate-wide bar of
$\geq 96\%$ line coverage on the CPU reference oracle (the
byte-equivalence ground truth against which Apple Metal and NVIDIA
CUDA are asserted). Specifically:
\begin{enumerate}[leftmargin=2em]
\item \textbf{Real cryptographic verifiers.} Vendored on-device kernels
for BLS12-381 pairing~\cite{bls12381}, Corona Module-LWE share
verification~\cite{corona}, and Groth16
verification~\cite{groth2016} over BLS12-381 against the Z-Chain
verifying-key root.
\item \textbf{Full EVM coverage.} 175 opcodes including the entire
\texttt{CALL} family, \texttt{CREATE}/\texttt{CREATE2},
\texttt{LOG}$_n$, \texttt{EXTCODE}$\!*$, \texttt{RETURNDATA}$\!*$,
\texttt{TLOAD}/\texttt{TSTORE}, \texttt{MCOPY},
\texttt{BLOBHASH}/\texttt{BLOBBASEFEE}; SSTORE journaling with
EIP-2929~\cite{eip2929} cold/warm and EIP-3529~\cite{eip3529}
refund accounting.
\item \textbf{Tier~1 lane-clock fast validation.} Production lane-clock
check against a per-round table in shared memory, with no per-key
MVCC chain walk in the common case (\S\ref{sec:tier1}).
\item \textbf{Tier~3 semantic reducers.} \texttt{DeferredOp} entries
committed deterministically per-lane at horizon time
(\S\ref{sec:tier3}); \texttt{Add}, \texttt{Sub}, \texttt{Append},
\texttt{BalanceDelta}, \texttt{FeeAccumulate}, \texttt{OrderAppend},
\texttt{AuctionMatch}, \texttt{MintCounter}, \texttt{NonceAdvance}.
\item \textbf{ConflictSpec ABI~\cite{aft2025conflictspec}} as a
fallback-safe oracle on top of speculative Block-STM
(\S\ref{sec:conflictspec}).
\item \textbf{NEMO LaneClass}~\cite{nemo2025} (Owned / Shared / HotShared
/ Commutative / Unknown) driving per-class execution policy
(\S\ref{sec:laneclass}).
\item \textbf{Dynamic versioning} a la Multiverse~\cite{multiverse2026}
(\S\ref{sec:multiverse}): \texttt{SingleVersionFast},
\texttt{MultiVersion}, \texttt{Reducer}, \texttt{Serialized}
modes selected per lane between rounds.
\item \textbf{Fiber checkpoints} per CALL-frame return for incremental
repair (\S\ref{sec:checkpoints}).
\item \textbf{Commit horizon} over Nova prefixes and Nebula causal cuts
(\S\ref{sec:horizon}); \textbf{MVCC GC} bound to the horizon
(\S\ref{sec:gc}).
\item \textbf{Motor-style VersionBlock layout}~\cite{motor2024}
(\S\ref{sec:versionblock}): 4--8 inline versions per key, RDMA /
multi-GPU friendly.
\item \textbf{A/B/M/F drain services} (\S\ref{sec:abmf}):
AdaptiveSchedule, BridgeAttest, MarketAuction,
FiberCheckpoint---growing the GPU service set from 12 (LP-132,
3.0) to 16.
\item \textbf{Cross-backend determinism harness}
(\S\ref{sec:determinism}): same input $\Rightarrow$ byte-identical
roots on Metal and CUDA.
\item \textbf{CSMV~\cite{csmv} commit-server scaffold} with a formally
specified CPU reference~\cite{vmvcc}: fibers emit read/write
intents, the commit service owns MVCC mutation, the abstract
semantics live in \texttt{lib/consensus/quasar/spec/}, the
differential fuzzer runs in CI.
\end{enumerate}
\paragraph{What does not ship in 4.0.}
Distributed multi-GPU MVCC over RDMA, operation-window validation for
pathological long transactions, kernel refinement proofs against the
abstract semantics, and 800G InfiniBand / GPUDirect cell topologies
remain QuasarSTM~5.0 research. They are tracked in a separate
research-track document and are not on the 2026-02-14 activation path.
\paragraph{Scope.}
This paper specifies QuasarSTM~4.0 frozen on 2026-02-07 and activated
on 2026-02-14. It supersedes the QuasarSTM~3.0 paper~\cite{lp010-quasarstm-3}
on every point where the two disagree; otherwise, 3.0 is normative for
substrate definitions (lanes, wave-tick scheduler, three-tier validation
skeleton, contention manager, multi-GPU sharding stub).
\paragraph{Contributions.}
\begin{enumerate}[leftmargin=2em]
\item A production specification of Tier~1 lane-clock fast validation
that retires the per-key MVCC walk in the common case
(\S\ref{sec:tier1}).
\item A production specification of Tier~3 semantic reducers as
first-class commit primitives, with the canonical reduction
schedule per lane (\S\ref{sec:tier3}).
\item A fallback-safe ConflictSpec ABI with explicit source priority
(\S\ref{sec:conflictspec}) and the NEMO LaneClass classification
with per-class policy (\S\ref{sec:laneclass}).
\item Dynamic per-lane versioning mode selection bound to a per-round
\texttt{LaneClockEntry} (\S\ref{sec:multiverse}).
\item A production checkpoint scheme for EVM fibers
(\S\ref{sec:checkpoints}) that yields measured 5--30$\times$
repair-cost reduction on router and multi-hop swap workloads.
\item Commit horizon semantics, MVCC GC, Motor VersionBlock layout
(\S\S\ref{sec:horizon}--\ref{sec:versionblock}).
\item Four new GPU drain services---A/B/M/F---without breaking the 3.0
service contract (\S\ref{sec:abmf}).
\item Replacement of HMAC-keccak placeholders with real BLS12-381,
Corona Module-LWE, and Groth16 on-device verifiers
(\S\ref{sec:verifiers}).
\item A cross-backend determinism harness and a formally specified CPU
reference; same input $\Rightarrow$ byte-identical roots on
Metal and CUDA (\S\ref{sec:determinism}).
\item Performance measurements: 1024-tx end-to-end stress in
$108\,\text{ms}$ on M1 Max in 6 wave ticks; on contended
regulated-DEX workloads, $\mathit{repair\_amplification} \approx
0.42$ (\S\ref{sec:performance}).
\item An activation roadmap: v0.41--v0.49 deliverables that landed in
the 2026-02-14 release (\S\ref{sec:activation}).
\end{enumerate}
