Ethereum's fast sync \cite{ethfastSync} and snap sync \cite{ethsnapSync} are the most widely deployed state sync protocols. Fast sync downloads trie nodes individually, resulting in high round-trip overhead. Snap sync iterates flat state with range proofs, reducing round trips but requiring a post-download ``healing'' phase.

Merkle range proofs were formalized by Laurie and Kasper \cite{laurie2013revocation} in the context of Certificate Transparency. The application to blockchain state sync was developed by the go-ethereum team.

Cosmos SDK's state sync \cite{cosmosStateSync} uses IAVL tree snapshots at regular intervals. Near Protocol's state sync \cite{nearStateSync} uses sharded state with epoch-level checkpoints.
