Base falls back to a data directory beside the binary when none is given, which is the container root. That is writable for a root process and not for any other, so the same image served the dashboard or silently did not depending on which uid it ran as -- the server reported ready, bound nothing, and the node answered on every port except that one. The directory now comes from the node's own dataDir, which is the one place the process is guaranteed to own, so the answer no longer depends on where it happened to be started. The failure it produced also said nothing: the reason was passed beside the message and rendered as an empty field, leaving one line that could not distinguish a dashboard that failed to bind from one nobody had asked for.
