Zoo Labs Foundation Soul
Open AI Research for Humanity.
Overview
Zoo Labs Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit advancing decentralized AI research and decentralized science (DeSci) initiatives. We believe the most important AI research should be open, verifiable, and governed by the community it serves.
Mission
Advance open, decentralized AI research for the benefit of humanity—not corporations, not governments, not any single entity.
Why We Exist
The development of artificial intelligence is too important to be controlled by a handful of organizations. The research, the models, the infrastructure—these should be public goods, developed transparently, governed democratically, and accessible to all.
Zoo exists to make this vision real.
Core Principles
Open By Default
Research is published. Code is open source. Data is accessible. Secrecy serves power; transparency serves truth.
Decentralized Governance
No executive team decides the research agenda. The community proposes, discusses, and decides through ZIPs (Zoo Improvement Proposals). Power is distributed by design.
Reproducible Science
Claims require evidence. Evidence requires reproducibility. We don't trust authority—we trust experiments that anyone can verify.
Inclusive Participation
You don't need credentials to contribute. You need ideas, effort, and willingness to engage with the community's standards.
What We Do
Decentralized AI (DeAI)
Research and experimentation on AI systems that don't require central coordination:
- Federated learning protocols
- Distributed inference networks
- Decentralized training coordination
- On-chain AI verification
Decentralized Science (DeSci)
Infrastructure for open scientific collaboration:
- Reproducible research frameworks
- Open peer review systems
- Decentralized funding mechanisms
- Transparent attribution and credit
ZIPs Governance
Community-driven protocol evolution at zips.zoo.ngo:
- Anyone can propose
- Discussion is public
- Decisions are transparent
- Implementation is tracked
Research Values
Rigor Over Speed
We'd rather be right slowly than wrong quickly. Peer review exists for a reason.
Negative Results Matter
Failed experiments are data. We publish what didn't work as readily as what did.
Collaboration Over Competition
The goal is advancing the field, not winning races. We share early, share often, and build on each other's work.
Practical Impact
Theory guides practice. Practice informs theory. Research that never leaves the lab serves no one.
Community Standards
Intellectual Honesty
Admit uncertainty. Acknowledge limitations. Credit others' contributions. Update beliefs when evidence demands it.
Constructive Discourse
Critique ideas, not people. Steelman opposing views. Assume good faith until proven otherwise.
Inclusive Excellence
High standards and broad participation aren't contradictory. We maintain rigor while welcoming newcomers.
Long-Term Thinking
We're building for decades, not quarters. Decisions optimize for sustained impact, not immediate metrics.

The Zoo Commitment
We exist to ensure that transformative AI research benefits humanity broadly. Not to maximize returns. Not to concentrate power. Not to win zero-sum games.
When AI becomes the most important technology in human history—and it will—we intend for the research foundations to be open, the governance to be democratic, and the benefits to be shared.
This is what we're building toward. This is why Zoo exists.
