models/kai: the results are kai-1's on the frozen harness, with
calibration error beside accuracy, the device the runs were measured
on, where Kai is behind, and the cardinality suite. The held-out
comparison named stage a5 only; kai-1 has not been run on held-out
rows, and the page says so. The architecture is described as built:
a factorized two-tower reader with a cross-attention head, and a
retrieval dual encoder above 160 options; score is a choice over the
levels, not an ordinal link. The paper link pointed at no public page.

decisions: 1 to 100 questions; a question and its state read 1,024
tokens together; checkpoint kai-1 and the routing fields v0.3.14 sends;
a noul's confidence; unrounded probabilities; Jev at $0.042 per million
input tokens; the errors with v0.3.14's statuses and messages.

guides/migrate/jev: the same limits; an over-long state is refused, not
truncated; options read to 512 tokens; Kai counts the request's text
once; kai-1's figures and an answer from its runtime; no latency until
one of the served build is published; Jev through Hanzo can answer 503
upstream_unavailable.

Cookbook: the recipes call api.hanzo.ai with a key, and the answers
they quote are kai-1's. models/index: Kai is served by API only.

Jev's column is what OpenRouter billed the benchmark harness
([`kai-a7/scores.json`](https://github.com/hanzoai/benchmarks/blob/c61361f/decision/results/kai-a7/scores.json));
Kai's is what `api.hanzo.ai` metered for the same requests on 2026-09-28. One
question a call costs 7.7 times less on Kai; five questions a call, 1.2 times
less.

## Speed
A call to Kai through `api.hanzo.ai` takes longer than a call to Jev through
OpenRouter. About 400 ms of each call (p50) is spent outside the model, in the
network and the gateway, and five questions over a typed-decision state take
835 ms in the model, on CPU. Timed as the harness timed Jev, each call on a new
connection:
| Requests | Jev, whole call | Kai, whole call | Kai, in the model (`latency_ms`) |
|---|---|---|---|
| AG News, one question | p50 227 ms, p95 334 ms (the first 50 calls, one at a time) | p50 464 ms, p95 645 ms (287 calls, one at a time) | p50 56 ms, p95 98 ms |
| Typed decisions, five questions | p50 255 ms, p95 341 ms (400 calls, eight at a time) | p50 1,252 ms, p95 1,859 ms (391 calls, one at a time) | p50 835 ms, p95 1,271 ms |
Jev's column is the harness's, from
[`kai-a7/scores.json`](https://github.com/hanzoai/benchmarks/blob/c61361f/decision/results/kai-a7/scores.json).
Kai's is `api.hanzo.ai`, measured from one client on 2026-09-28. AG News counts
the 287 calls that were the first of their request, since a repeated request
was answered in about 8 ms in the model. Typed decisions leaves out 9 calls the
gateway answered `502` or `503`, which were sent again.
No latency of the served build (kai-1, on CPU) is published yet, so none is
quoted here. Each response's `latency_ms` is the decision's wall time in the
model; time your own calls end to end. Each Kai replica answers one request at
a time, so a long request, many questions or many options, delays the
requests behind it on that replica.
## What does not carry
**A long state.** Kai reads at most 1,024 tokens for each question: the
question, then as much of the state as fits. The rest of the state is dropped
and the call still answers; `usage.input_tokens` shows what was read, and a
40,000-character state was read as 1,044 tokens with its two options. An option
is read up to its first 48 tokens. Jev's window is 32,000 tokens
([OpenRouter](https://openrouter.ai/typesafe/jev-1.13)). Put what decides the
question first in `state`, or split a long document across calls.
**A long state.** Kai reads each question with the state beside it, at most
1,024 tokens together, and refuses a longer one with `422` and code
`state_too_long`, naming the tokens it needs. An option is read whole up to 512
tokens; a longer one is `option_too_long`. Jev's window is 32,000 tokens
([OpenRouter](https://openrouter.ai/typesafe/jev-1.13)). Keep the state to what
decides the question, or split a long document across calls.
**`usage.cost`.** Jev's answer states its price; Kai's states
`usage.input_tokens`, billed at \$0.021 per million. The org's spend is
`GET /v1/billing/usage`, one row per call, model `kai`.
**Self-hosting.** Kai runs at `api.hanzo.ai` only: its weights and its runtime
are not published, so it cannot be self-hosted today.
are not published, so it cannot be self-hosted.
**Jev's ids on Hanzo are billed per call.** `typesafe/jev-1.13` sent to
`api.hanzo.ai` is forwarded to OpenRouter and billed \$0.03 a call
([pricing](/docs/decisions#pricing)); on OpenRouter the AG News calls above
cost \$0.0000171 each.
**Jev through Hanzo.** `typesafe/jev-1.13` sent to `api.hanzo.ai` is forwarded
to OpenRouter and billed \$0.042 per million input tokens
([pricing](/docs/decisions#pricing)). It is partly unavailable: a Jev request
can be answered `503` with code `upstream_unavailable` and the message
`typesafe/jev-1.13 is temporarily unavailable`, with a `Retry-After`. Retry it,
or call Jev on OpenRouter directly.

## What Kai computes
Kai reads the state with a multilingual encoder. Each option is encoded on its
own and scored against the state and its evidence, rather than packed beside
the others into one sequence. So:
Kai is a factorized two-tower reader with a cross-attention head, and a
retrieval dual encoder in front of it for large choices.
- **Option count and order are not bounded by one sequence.** A question's
options do not compete for one encoder window.
- **The answer does not depend on option order.** Listing the labels in
another order gives the same distribution over them.
- **Two kinds of sequence, one encoder.** The question and its state are one
sequence. Each option is its own, `[CLS] option [SEP]`, up to 512 tokens.
Both go through the same mmBERT-base encoder: 22 layers, 768 wide, 12 heads,
a 256,000-token vocabulary. Option states are cached across calls.
- **A cross-attention head.** Each option's tokens attend to the question and
state through two cross-attention blocks, then a scorer gives the option one
number.
- **Retrieval above 160 options.** A choice of more than 160 options is first
shortlisted by a dual encoder: 256-dimensional projections of the context's
first token against each option's. The head scores the top 160; the rest keep
their retrieval share.
So:
- **The answer does not depend on option order.** Each option is scored on its
own and the scores are normalized together, so listing the labels in another
order gives the same distribution over them.
- **`noul` is label-symmetric.** P(true) is σ(s(true) − s(false)): both sides
are scored by the same function.
- **`score` is ordinal.** Levels are scored with a cumulative link, so the
probabilities respect the order the levels were given in.
- **`score` is a choice over the levels.** Each level's text is an option.
Training used the ranked probability score, which charges a wrong level by
its distance from the right one; the level order is not built into the
scorer.
- **Calibrated by temperature.** Probabilities are temperature-scaled in six
buckets, by question type and option count, fitted on held-out calibration
rows.
- **Questions in one request are independent.** Each question is read with the
state beside it and answered on its own; no answer conditions another.
kai-1 is stage a7's weights reading options up to 512 tokens, plus one routed
capability: a HelpSteer2 readout that answers questions keyed `helpfulness`,
`correctness`, `coherence`, `complexity` or `verbosity`. Every other question
runs the base model unchanged.
Kai runs in pure Rust on [hanzo-ml](https://github.com/hanzoai/ml), on CPU,
Metal, CUDA and ROCm. Its encoder starts from Laya's multilingual weights
(Apache-2.0).
