In the linked PR, we made `<GroupChooser />` use the site's preloaded
list of groups instead of fetching the list from the servers every time
the component is triggered. However, when a site has thousands of
groups, the performance issue has shifted from the server to the browser
— `<GroupChooser />` takes several seconds to render in the browser for
a site with thousands of groups and the sites becomes completely
unresponsive while the component is rendering.
This PR changes the `<GroupChooser />` so it limits the displayed groups
to 100, with ability to filter the list to show more groups when there
are more than 100 groups.
In a few places throughout the app, when we render the `<GroupChooser
/>` component, we fetch the full groups list of the site from the
`/groups/search` endpoint. This is wasteful because the full groups list
is already included in the preloaded data that's sent to the client app
on the initial page load, so we can just use this preloaded list for
`<GroupChooser />` and we can avoid making an HTTP request.

This commit makes the
[color-scheme-toggle](https://github.com/discourse/discourse-color-scheme-toggle)
theme component a core feature with improvements and bug fixes. The
theme component will be updated to become a no-op if the core feature is
enabled.
Noteworthy changes:
* the color mode selector has a new "Auto" option that makes the site
render in the same color mode as the user's system preference
* the splash screen respects the color mode selected by the user
* dark/light variants of category logos and background images are now
picked correctly based on the selected color mode
* a new `interface_color_selector` site setting to disable the selector
or choose its location between the sidebar footer or header

This commit fixes a bug in the "Dark Mode" checkbox in the interface user
preferences where the checkbox state doesn't appear in the disabled
state if the user disables dark mode.
This happens because when rendering the checkbox, we check the relevant
user options field within the controller's `init` method, but at that
point in the controller's life cycle, the `user_option` object isn't
available. What we should do instead is move this check to the route's
`setupController` method where the `user_option` object is available and
we can set the correct state on the controller.

Stopping propagation when a `DMenu`'s trigger is clicked could prevent
another floating UI element, e.g. the search menu in the header, from
closing when clicking outside of it. We call `stopPropagation` on the
event to allow more clicks within a `DMenu`'s trigger without it getting
closed, so we shouldn't stop the event propagation if the `DMenu` hasn't
been expanded yet.
We're embarking on a project for overhauling the color palette and theme
systems in Discourse. As part of this project, we're making each color
palette include light and dark modes instead of the status quo of
requiring 2 separate color palettes to implement light and dark modes.
This commit is a first step towards that goal; it adds a code path for
generating and serving `color_definitions` stylesheets using the
built-in dark variant of a color palette. All of this code path is
behind a default-off site setting `use_overhauled_theme_color_palette`,
so there's no change in behavior unless the setting is enabled.

As part of the theme overhauling project, we're making each theme fully
own/control its color palette which can be edited directly on the theme
page. To make this possible, we need to introduce a special type of
color palettes that are marked as "owned by a theme" in the database
which aren't displayed in the admin color palettes page and can't be
edited from it. This commit is the first step of this change; it adds a new
join table to associate a color palette with a theme. For now, we're
keeping the relationship one-to-one (hence the `UNIQUE` indexes), but we
may later change it to one-to-many.

The preloaded `site` object for anons on login-required sites is a stripped down version of the full object with just a specific set of attributes and doesn't use the site serializer. This results in the `full_name_required_for_signup` and `full_name_visible_in_signup` attributes not making it to the client app when a login-required site is accessed by an anon, causing the name field in the signup form to not be rendered, even when it's required.
This commit includes those attributes in the stripped down version of the `site` object that's used for anons on login-required sites.
The `faker` gem, which is a dependency for the `*:populate` rake tasks, isn't installed in the production environment, so we should only load files/classes related to those rake tasks in non-production environments.

When the `enable_names` setting is false and the `full_name_requirement` setting is set to `required_at_signup`, the name field in the signup form should effectively be not required (and hidden). However, that is not actually the case at the moment because the `name-validation.js` mixin only checks for the `full_name_requirement` setting when determining whether the name field should block a new signup.
This commit fixes the issue by making the `full_name_required_for_signup` and `full_name_visible_in_signup` site attributes check for the `enable_names` setting themselves. This spares any consumers of these properties from having to remember to include a check for the `enable_names` setting.
Adds a new reviewables:populate rake task that works in a similar fashion to the existing *:populate rake tasks. The rake task creates pending reviewable of all core types, with possibility for plugins to extend the task to populate their own reviewable types.

We've merged a PR that requires an entry for all site settings in the keywords section in `server.en.yml`, and I merged my previous PR without rebasing my branch so I didn't catch the new failure.
This commit replaces the `full_name_required` setting with a new `full_name_requirement` setting to allow more flexibility with the name field in the signup form. The new setting has 2 options, "Required at signup" and "Optional at signup", which are equivalent to the true/false possibilities of the old setting, and a third option "Hidden at signup" that hides the name field from the signup form, making it effectively optional too.
New sites will have the "Hidden at signup" option as the default option, and existing site will continue to use the option that maps to their current configuration.

Admins and moderators can see a user's deleted posts via the `/u/:username/deleted-posts` route. Admins can always see any post on the site, but that's not always the case for moderators, e.g., they can't see all PMs. So, this route accounts for that and excludes posts that a moderator wouldn't be allowed to see if they were not deleted.
However, there's currently a problem with that logic where admins who also have moderation privileges, are treated the same way as moderators and prevented from seeing posts that pure moderators can't see. This commit fixes that problem and only applies the permission checks to moderators who don't have admin privileges.

This commit makes the `contact_url` in the /about page behave as an absolute URL instead of a relative one if it doesn't explicitly start with a slash or a protocol. This prevents situation where, e.g., `www.example.com` is specified in the setting and the contact URL anchor tag ends up with a `href` that navigates to `<site address>/www.example.com` instead of just `www.example.com`. We prevent this by adding 2 leading slashes `//` to `contact_url` which makes the `href` resolves to the specified `contact_url` using the same protocol as the current site's.

We've seen in some communities abuse of user profile where bios and other fields are used in malicious ways, such as malware distribution. A common pattern between all the abuse cases we've seen is that the malicious actors tend to have 0 posts and have a low trust level.
To eliminate this abuse vector, or at least make it much less effective, we're making the following changes to user profiles:
1. Anonymous, TL0 and TL1 users cannot see any user profiles for users with 0 posts except for staff users
2. Anonymous and TL0 users can only see profiles of TL1 users and above
Users can always see their own profile, and they can still hide their profiles via the "Hide my public profile" preference. Staff can always see any user's profile.

Uploads that are linked to site settings shouldn't be flagged as secure in login-required sites that enable secure uploads. However, in order for site setting uploads to not be marked secured, the frontend uploader has to include 2 params in the upload request: `for_site_setting: true` and `type: "site_setting"`.
Since these 2 params are semantically identical, we want the `type: "site_setting"` param alone to make the upload correctly treated as a site setting upload. To achieve that, we need to include the `site_setting` type in the public types list because the `for_site_setting` param has the same effect — it marks the upload as a public type.

Prior to the linked commit, the `uploads#create` endpoint had a `upload_type` and `type` param that acted as aliases for each other and raised an error if both of them were missing. In the linked commit, we removed the `type` param and always required the `upload_type` param which break API consumers that only included `type` in their requests.
This commit adds back the `type` param temporarily and introduces a deprecation message for it so that API consumers are made aware of the eventual removal of the `type` param.

Prior to Uppy, the `uploads#create` endpoint used to receive a `type` param that indicated the purpose/target of the upload, such as `avatar`, `site_setting` and so on. With the introduction of Uppy, the `type` param became the MIME type of the file being uploaded, and the purpose/target of the upload became a new param called `upload_type`, however the backend could still use the `type` param (which now contains MIME type) as the purpose/target of the upload if `upload_type` is absent.
We technically don't need to send the MIME type over the network, but it seems like it's done by Uppy and we have no control over the `type` param that Uppy includes:

This commit does a couple of things:
1. It amends the `uploads#create` endpoint so it always requires the `upload_type` param and doesn't fallback to `type` if `upload_type` is absent
2. It forces consumers of the `UppyUpload` class (and by extension `UppyImageUploader`) to specify `type` of the upload

The migration that adds the invite link to the sidebar determines the position of the link by looking up the max position that a primary link has and inserts the invite link at the max position plus 1. This approach works fine for most sites, however, sites that have deleted all primary links from the sidebar will fail because the max position will be `nil` which blows up the migration.
This commit addresses this edge case by falling back to looking up the min position of secondary links, or to zero if there're also no secondary links, and then inserts the invite link at the min position minus 1.

The visitor stats on the /about page were previously showing as `NaN` immediately after enabling the `display_eu_visitor_stats` site setting because the stats for the /about page are cached and updated once every 30 minutes in a sidekiq job. The `NaN` would go away upon the next run of the relevant sidekiq job, but it's not good UX to display a cryptic `NaN` until the job runs. Under certain conditions, a recurring automation can end up in a state with no pending automation records, causing it to not execute again until manually triggered.
We use the `RRule` gem to calculate the next execution date and time for recurring automations. The gem takes the interval, frequency, start date, and a time range, and returns all dates/times within this range that meet the recurrence rule. For example:
```ruby
RRule::Rule
.new("FREQ=DAILY;INTERVAL=1", dtstart: Time.parse("2023-01-01 07:30:00 UTC"))
.between(Time.zone.now, Time.zone.now + 2.days)
# => [Sat, 14 Sep 2024 07:30:00.000000000 UTC +00:00, Sun, 15 Sep 2024 07:30:00.000000000 UTC +00:00]
```
However, if the time component of the first point provided to `.between()` is slightly ahead of the start date (e.g., `dtstart`), the first date/time returned by `RRule` can fall outside the specified range by the same subsecond amount. For instance:
```ruby
RRule::Rule
.new("FREQ=DAILY;INTERVAL=1", dtstart: Time.parse("2023-01-01 07:30:00 UTC"))
.between(Time.parse("2023-01-01 07:30:00.999 UTC"), Time.parse("2023-01-03 07:30:00 UTC"))
.first
# => Sun, 01 Jan 2023 07:30:00.000000000 UTC +00:00
```
Here, the start date/time given to `.between()` is 999 milliseconds after 07:30:00, but the first date returned is exactly 07:30:00 without the 999 milliseconds. This causes the next recurring date to fall into the past if the automation executes within a subsecond of the start time, leading to the automation stalling.
I'm not sure why `RRule` does this, but it seems intentional judging by the source of the `.between()` method:
https://github.com/square/ruby-rrule/blob/b9911b71477ba617184b3769b0c163ba3e8bfb9f/lib/rrule/rule.rb#L28-L32
This commit fixes the issue by selecting the first date ahead of the current time from the list returned by `RRule`, rather than the first date directly.

Anonymous users are "shadow" users created when an existing real user desires to post anonymously. This feature is off by default, but it can be enabled via the `allow_anonymous_posting` site setting. Those shadow users shouldn't be included in the users directory (`/u`).

Static pages such as /about, /faqs, /tos etc. currently overflow horizontally on some Android devices (reproducible on Samsung Galaxy A11). The previous commit added an `after_create` callback that triggers a refresh for the user directory whenever a `User` record is created. Theoretically, this approach should work, however, there's a gotcha in practice, because during a real user registration, when the `User` record is created in the database, it's not marked as active until the user verifies their email address and the user directory excludes inactive users, so the initial directory refresh triggered by the `after_create` callback becomes pointless.
To make a new user appear in the user directory immediately after sign up, we need to trigger a refresh via an `after_save` callback when they verify their email address and become active.
If you’re viewing a tag and you switch to a different tag via the sidebar or the tags dropdown, after expanding the info section of the tag page via the wrench button, the info section keeps showing the previous tag's details instead of the new one.
This happens because the tag info section makes an ajax request to load the tag's details, and this request is made inside the `didInsertElement` hook which is only fired once when the component is rendered. To fix this, we need to set the result from the ajax request to null and add a `didUpdateAttrs` hook to trigger another request to load the info of the new tag.

This commit implements 2 new metrics/stats in the /about page for the _estimated_ numbers of unique visitors from the EU and the rest of the world. This new feature is currently off by default, but it can be enabled by turning on the hidden `display_eu_visitor_stats` site settings via the rails console.
There are a number of assumptions that we're making here in order to estimate the number of unique visitors, specifically:
1. we're assuming that the average of page views per anonymous visitor is similar to the average number of page views that a logged-in visitor makes, and
2. we're assuming that the ratio of logged in visitors from the EU is similar to the ratio of anonymous visitors from the EU
Discourse keeps track of the number of both logged-in and anonymous page views, and also the number of unique logged-in visitors and where they're from. So with those numbers and the assumptions above, we can estimate the number of unique anonymous visitors from the EU and the rest of the world.

This commit fixes a bug where the silence button is incorrectly displayed on the admin page of a staff user. It's not actually possible to silence a staff user because the backend correctly prevents it, but the frontend isn't checking if the button should be displayed.
Another small bug that this commit fixes is the similar users list not showing up inside the silence/suspend modals due to also a bug in the frontend.
I've also changed the way similar users are loaded so that they're not returned by the `admin/users#show` endpoint anymore and moved them into a new endpoint that the penalize modals (suspend and silence) can call directly to retrieve the list of users. This is done because the similar users list is never shown on the admin user page (`/admin/users/:user_id/:username`); they're only needed when the suspend or silence modals are opened.

This service comes in handy with, for example, the controller for the flags admin config area which may need to update some site settings related to flags.

This commit introduces the initial UI for the admin config area for the /about page. The UI isn't wired and doesn't do anything yet, but we're going to iterate on it in future commits.

This commit removes the `/admin-revamp` routes which were introduced as a part of an experiment to revamp the admin pages. We still want to improve the admin/staff experience, but we're going to do them within the existing `/admin` routes instead of introducing a completely new route.
Our initial efforts to improve the Discourse admin experience is this commit which introduces the foundation for a new subroute `/admin/config` which will house various new pages for configuring Discourse. The first new page (or "config area") will be `/admin/config/about` that will house all the settings and controls for configuring the `/about` page of Discourse.

This commit moves the logic for crawler rate limits out of the application controller and into the request tracker middleware. The reason for this move is to apply rate limits to all crawler requests instead of just the requests that make it to the application controller. Some requests are served early from the middleware stack without reaching the Rails app for performance reasons (e.g. `AnonymousCache`) which results in crawlers getting 200 responses even though they've reached their limits and should be getting 429 responses.

The users directory is updated on a daily cadence. However, when a site is new and doesn't have many users, it can be confusing that a user who has just joined doesn't show up in the users until a day after they join. To eliminate this confusion, this commit triggers a refresh for the users directory as soon as as a user joins, if the site is in bootstrap mode. The reason for the conditional trigger is that refreshing the users directory is an expensive operation and doing it often on a large site with many users could lead to performance problems.

This commit adds a different message to the users directory (`/u`) that's shown when there are no results for the search term instead of showing the one for when there are no users on the site yet.

The automation plugin has 4 custom field types that are array typed. However, array typed custom fields are deprecated and should be migrated to JSON type.
This commit does a couple of things:
1. Migrate all four custom fields to JSON
2. Fix a couple of small bugs that have been discovered while migrating the custom fields to JSON (see the comments on this commit's PR for details https://github.com/discourse/discourse/pull/26939)
Some combinations of start_date and frequency/interval values can cause a recurring automation rule to either trigger before its start_date or never trigger. Example repros:
- Configure a recurring automation with hourly recurrence and a start_date several days ahead. What this will do is make the automation start running hourly immediately even though the start_date is several days ahead.
- Configure a recurring automation with a weekly recurrence and a start_date several weeks ahead. This will result in the automation never triggering even after the start_date.
These 2 scenarios share the same cause which is that the automation plugin doesn't use the start_date as the date for the first run and instead uses the frequency/interval values from the current time to calculate the first run date.
This PR fixes this bug by adding an explicit check for start_date and using it as the first run's date if it's ahead of the current time.
Recurring automations are triggered by a scheduled job that runs every minute and checks for due automations, runs them and then marks as them as completed (by deleting the `PendingAutomation` record). However, the job is currently subject to a race condition where a recurring automation can be executed more than once at its due date if it takes more than a minute to finish.
This commit adds a mutex around the code that triggers the recurring automation so that no concurrent executions can happen for a single automation.

It's currently possible to setup multiple automation rules that trigger each other resulting in an infinite loop. To prevent that, this commit adds a global "circuit breaker" that prevents all automations from triggering while an automation rule is executing.

This commit fixes a bug in theme settings migrations where values of `objects` typed theme settings aren't passed to migrations even when there are overriding values for those settings. What causes this bug is that, when creating the hash that contains all the overridden settings and will be passed to migrations, the values of `objects` typed settings are incorrectly retrieved from the `value` column (which is always nil for `objects` type) instead of `json_value`. `objects` settings are different from all other types in that they store their values in the `json_value` column and they need to be special-cased when retrieving their values.
This commit adds a new option to the `user_updated` trigger of the automation plugin to only trigger an automation for new users that join after the automation is enabled.

This commit adds a new automation script for creating topics. It's very similar to the existing 'create a post' automation, except that it posts new topics in a specific category and with optional tags.

Plugins that are hidden or disabled aren't shown in the plugins list at `/admin/plugins` because they cannot be changed. However, the `#show` route doesn't check for the plugin's state and responds with 200 and the plugin's info even if the plugin is hidden or disabled. This commit makes the `#show` route respond with 404 if the plugin is hidden or disabled.
Descriptions for the `category-list`, `file-size-restriction` and `file-types-list` site/theme settings aren't rendered due to a bug that was introduced when those components were migrated to Glimmer components. This commit fixes the bug which is that arguments passed to .gjs components should be accessed as `@argument` and not `this.arugment` inside the `<template>` tag.
When a topic fails to be created due to the user not having permission to add tags to the topic, the error message that you get is `There was an error tagging the topic` which is very generic and doesn't explain where/what the problem is. This commit adds a clearer error message for this scenario.
