.gitignore's blanket *.json excluded live/mainnet/genesis.json. `git add live/` skipped it without a word and the commit reported "2 files changed" — so the artifact that reproduces mainnet was announced as preserved while the more valuable half of it was never tracked. Caught by cloning the repo back and hashing what came down, not by reading the commit. genesis.bytes did land, and it is the blob that defines mainnet's chain ids. But genesis.json is what startup.sh actually decodes on every boot, it is the human-readable source, and it is what a rebuild takes as input. Keeping only the built artifact would leave nothing to rebuild FROM. The negation covers live/ rather than this one path: anything placed there is by definition a copy of what a running network needs, so an ignore rule must never be the reason one goes missing.
