Zoo Improvement Proposals (ZIPs)

Zoo Improvement Proposals (ZIPs) are the primary mechanism for proposing new features, gathering community input, and documenting design decisions for the Zoo ecosystem. This process ensures that changes to the Zoo platform are transparently reviewed and achieve community consensus before implementation.

What is a ZIP?

A Zoo Improvement Proposal (ZIP) is a design document that provides information to the Zoo community about a proposed change to the system. ZIPs serve as the formal pathway to introduce improvements and build agreement on their adoption. They are used for:

• Proposing new DeFi protocols and NFT standards
• Defining AI-powered gaming mechanics
• Collecting community input on metaverse features
• Documenting design decisions for DAO governance

ZIP Process

Write the ZIP, open a pull request, take review, land it. A ZIP is born Draft and stays there until someone can point at the code.

Status

A ZIP's status: frontmatter is the only place its status is recorded. The table above and the pages on zips.zoo.ngo are derived from it. Three values, each meaning one thing:

Status	Meaning
Draft	Proposed. No implementation, or the ZIP describes an experiment rather than a shipped system.
Final	The thing the ZIP specifies exists in code, and repository: names where.
Living	Never finalises. Policy, registries and indexes that are amended as the ecosystem moves.

Zoo Labs Foundation is a research network, so Draft is an ordinary resting place, not a failure — a proposal describing an experiment belongs there for as long as it is an experiment. Do not move a ZIP to Final without naming the code, and do not leave a ZIP at Final once the code it named has gone.

Earlier revisions of this repository used Active, Review, Implemented, Proposed, Accepted and Superseded as well. Active on a registry became Living; Active on a completed adoption became Final; the rest were never carried by a ZIP. A superseded ZIP is deleted rather than tombstoned — the successor carries what mattered.

Index

scripts/index.py reads the ZIP frontmatter and rewrites the table above. It refuses to write when a ZIP has no frontmatter, carries a status outside the three values, disagrees with its own filename, shares a number with another ZIP, requires: a ZIP that does not exist, or when the corpus has shrunk below the floor recorded in the script. CI runs scripts/index.py --check.
